Legendary lipsync club LIPPY reopens its doors for the first time in decades. Back in the 80s, the night launched the careers of renowned labial artistes Steve Upperlip and One-Tongue Tyra. But as lipsyncing lost popularity in the 90s - with acts such as Milli Vanilli discrediting the otherwise fully authentic world of pop music - LIPPY had to close down. And lipsyncing was pushed underground. In an unregulated scene, lipsync cage matches became rife, and fatalities were not unheard of. More recently, there's been a growing awareness of the artistic value and health benefits of lipsyncing. And with new legislation outlawing the most dangerous practices, LIPPY can finally remerge from the shadows.
But tonight’s grand reopening performance has attracted more than the expected crowd of queerdos and weirdos, Karens and Quentins. In the audience are Alejandro, a hopeless romantic looking for inspiration to finish his love poem; Lizzy Q, a reluctant Tudor tyrant trying to connect with her people; and Antoine LaPouffe, a French TV reporter on a mission to heal Britain. They know LIPPY is a guaranteed lolathon, but might it also provide them with some answers to their woes? And will anyone flout the new laws and perform the Silent Swan - a death-defying mute lipsync?
LIPPY is going to the Edinburgh Fringe this August! Come see this festival edition of your favourite lipsync night before we head to Scotland.
