akt supports LGBTQ+ young people (aged 16-25) who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. We provide safe homes, mentoring and support so no young person has to choose between a safe home and being who they are. akt works face-to-face in London, Manchester and Newcastle and our digital service reaches young people across the UK.
Almost one quarter of all young people facing or experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+, and 77 per cent of those cite rejection or abuse from their families as what has led them to being so.
The charity was set up in Manchester in 1989 and has provided over 250,000 nights off the street and supported over 50,000 LGBTQ+ young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness over the last 30 years.
