Since 2019 Camden Shorinji Kempo has been introducing people to our brand of practical self-defense!
Everyone is welcome.
Our martial art never relies on brute strength. Instead, we focus on weak points and use techniques that allow a smaller person to effectively defend themselves against a larger opponent. As part of this, we practice shouting (Ki ai) at an attacker to teach you how to find your voice in any situation. Our practice balances 'hard' strikes (kicks and punches) and 'soft' grappling (escapes, locks, and throws). We also teach restorative massage (seiho) and seated meditation (zazen), to help with mindfulness. All our classes centre respect and cooperation - it's never a competition!
You'll learn how to block, strike and even hold your ground when needed. This includes standing firm and shouting at your opponent. We will also show you how practicing martial arts can improve your health, well-being, and confidence. We always aim to create a safe and encouraging environment even as we learn how to shout, punch, and kick - please get in touch if you have any questions, or with ways, we can make sure you feel safe.
You don't need any experience in sports or martial arts, just enthusiasm. We pride ourselves on being the only all-female-founded and openly LGBTQIA+ Shorinji Kempo club. Everyone is welcome and we can't wait for you to join us!
All you need is a bottle of water, some comfortable gym clothes, and an open mind.
Thursday is our normal paced class. We encourage you to try our Sunday class if you are a completely new to martial arts.
See you soon!
