Join GPN on Tuesday 23rd November 2021 at 6:30pm, for our last event of the year!
We are delighted to welcome
Professor Ben Campkin
Professor of History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism
Co-Director, UCL Urban Laboratory
UCL Bartlett School of Architecture
Author of Remaking London: Decline and Regeneration in Urban Culture (2013), which won the 2015 Jane Jacobs Urban Communication Foundation Award. He co-authored the report LGBTQ+ Cultural Infrastructure in London: Night Venues, 2006-present (2016) which has informed the London Plan 2021 and is completing a monograph on LGBT identities and venues in London since the 1980s, Queer Premises (forthcoming with Bloomsbury).
The subject of his talk is:
Mapping Queer Premises: LGBTQ venues in London from the 1980s to Today
How have movements for LGBTQ+ rights and equality connected with the governance of cities?
How do LGBTQ+ venue openings and closures reflect the wider dynamics of urban change?
Using London as a case study, Ben Campkin, will explore these questions in his talk.
From the Greater London Council-funded London Lesbian and Gay Centre of the 1980s and 1990s, to the spate of venue closures in the mid-2000s, and the campaigns for architectural and community listing that this triggered, we will take a look at the factors that shape the profile of London’s queer infrastructure.
The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session. I am sure that many of us will want to contribute to this.
